Grocery Time!

Time for this weeks grocery list! A lot of things here are new to me :)

Cottage Cheese
Organic Plain Yogurt - Whole Milk  (not that crap with the aspartame!)
15 things of Greek Yogurt  - Best tasting was the Stoneyfield brand with Honey!
A big head of cabbage. I wanted red cabbage but Mom couldn't find any at Shoppers.
Beets
Some frozen veggies like peas, broccoli, and other veggie mixes
Some frozen fruits like blueberries, peaches, etc.
Russet potatoes, so big they pretty much qualify as a whole meal
Carrots
Zucchini
Cucumbers
Silken Tofu
Firm Tofu
Veggie Patch Chik'n Nuggets (so I don't use mom's meat she likes to save for dinner)
Raw almonds
Almond butter
Boneless skinless chicken breasts

All I need is some emu (I wish!) and I'll be all set!

Workin' On The Wii Fit

The Wii Fit sure is a groovy thing, especially once the more advanced programmes are unlocked!

My ankles are already faring better in my heeled boots after an hour of balance exercises and yoga work!

Current Weight according to the Wii - 245. I seem to shift between 245-250, usually <2 lbs difference. I need to start doing the Body Test at the same time every day. Still trying to get into the routine!

Overall, this is an excellent product. My sister, her bf, and my bf all compete to see who can do the most and beat each others scores, and in the process, we are really getting quite a work out! I highly recommend the Wii Fit. The Wii in general is awesome, but the Wii Fit really takes the cake.

Salad Nommage and the Abuse of the Word "Gourmet"

1

Posted by Emily | Posted on Saturday, December 26, 2009

My mom is a real abuser of the word "gourmet," and it's quite astounding given the kinds of meals she can create. Generally, though, the abuse comes around lunch time, when some of us are wanting a little more than a Cup O' Noodles, and quite frankly, something fresher than that, too.

Today's "gourmet" dish is a quick and easy one: The Basic Vinaigrette Salad.

-------------------------------------------------------

Put some balsamic vinegar and olive oil in a bowl way bigger than you think you need, according to Sir Alton Brown.

Yummy all by itself, but feel free to add some salt if you wish.

A head of Romaine will work fine. The darker the greens, the better they are for you. Tear gently!

I like carrots because they add crunch, sweetness, and beta carotene for some of that tasty eye health!

Mix it up gently but right quick, as the dressing will leave that lettuce less than perky in a couple minutes.

I just toss on some croutons and add a side of plump tomatoes a la Costco for good measure.
I thought it right to do so given the whole "gourmet" name applied to this simpler than simple salad!

Next time I'm definitely throwing either some chicken, beef, or salmon on top of that, need more protein according to Jarrad again!

Other sides for this lunch were:
Multigrain knäckbröd, aka crispbread, with homemade raspberry jam
Apple slices
Decent handful of pure raw almonds!

Good Nommage!

Healthy Holiday

Christmas proved great for me health wise! My family now owns a Wii, complete with Wii Fit game AND a game of yoga and exercises that uses a motion sensitive camera to correct posture and poses! But the best part of tonight was the evening meal.

Harley waiting to be served.

This sharp yet not bitter cheddar was my dad's Christmas gift. A little dab'll do ya.

Caesar salad with crisp Romaine lettuce and shaved parmesan.

Insalata Caprese, aka tomatoes and mozzarella with olive oil and basil.

Mom stirs the mushrooms in the cast iron pan.

Beef Tenderloin in the cast iron pan, from a recipe found in Nordstroms Entertaining at Home Cookbook.

Sister and Mom get a big wiff of not just the beef, but the fresh rosemary that covers it!

Harley gets his share of the meal, served raw, after we finish ours.

No Christmas is complete without Cream of Crab soup.

Mom's Cream of Crab is less cream and a lot more crab. She typically triples the amount of crab the recipe calls for and since we normally have a half cup-one cup per person, it's not a complete health killer even with the heavy cream.

This meal is overall very well balanced, and wonderful foods don't have to spell the end of the world when it comes to eating healthy. In fact, some of the most delicious things on this earth are the healthiest around.

Enjoy the foods you love, eat in moderation, and relax.

Merry Christmas, everyone.

When I posted a link to my last blog on Facebook, I got some really helpful responses, and two not-so-helpful ones.

"2200 cals a day? put your all math behind.. my suggestion throw up whatever you eat.. get friendly with your middle finger it can reach down your throat!
hey i mean no mean mean.. just i want you to look like in that picture."

Followed by:

lol douche? hey i put serious thought into that... i thought it would be nice to see you again like that! i didnt mean to trigger your insecurity!

These are the kinds of comments that don't even merit a response, though my sister did provide some, er, colourful feedback. If you encounter these types, ignore them, because odds are what is flawed about them is far greater than what is flawed about you.

Anyway, I'm off to enjoy Christmas Eve. Have a wonderful Holiday, people.

Make Your Holiday Dinner Divine: Relax

Be divine.

Tonight is a night of steak fries and homemade baby back ribs. Today was a day of carrots, eggs, and chicken. Tonight will not be as bad as one would think, because today was a good day, and having Mom's ribs isn't the end of the world.

I won't eat a ton, of course, but I will eat my fill and I will not feel guilty about it. I never accomplished much in my life when guilt was the thing to keep me going. I'm doing far better with the positive idea of a healthier happier future guiding my decisions.

It's okay to have some of those family comfort foods on the Holidays. The more you stress about the calories in your Grandma's apple crumble, the worse you will feel about yourself and you will miss the entire purpose of being healthy and happy in the first place.

I'm off to eat a rib section and some nice steak fries. Tomorrow will be full of healthy seafood dishes for Christmas Eve, and a small slice of the red velvet cake my sister just made (covered in roasted pecans, I might add.) Nom nom nom.

Hope your Christmas is divine, everyone. Thanks for reading.

Nommage - Chinese Chicken and Zukes Stir Fry

0

Posted by Emily | Posted on Tuesday, December 22, 2009

Nommage is my word for totally good food, a la "nom nom nom."

Today's lunchtime nommage:

----

Chinese Chicken and Zucchini Stir Fry
For two people!

One medium skillet or a wok
One large boneless chicken breast
One or two zucchini
Two tablespoons (or more if you'd like) of Annie Chun's Chinese Stir Fry sauce
3 cloves of garlic (or however much you like, I want more garlic in my recipes, it's totally good for you!)
A small bit of fresh ginger, or you can get the tubes of ginger to use as well (those are good for more accurate measurements)
A handful of sesame seeds. They're totally awesome and pretty painless form of protein and polyunsaturated fats, apparently! I put mine in at the end so the polyunsaturated fats stay put!

Chop the chicken up into small thin strips. Mix with the stir fry sauce.
Chop the zukes lengthwise to make thin "noodles" for your stir fry.
Spray the pan quickly, heat it to medium-high, add the garlic and ginger to start.
After a couple minutes, throw in the chicken, zukes, and two tablespoons of water.
Cover and let it go for 10 minutes or so, stirring occasionally.
When the chicken seems done, throw in the sesame seeds. Let it cook for a couple more minutes so the zukes soften enough.
Throw a bit of sea salt on top and serve it up!

-----

This was a pretty awesome dish, though next time I may put other veggies in with it (like snow peas!) but this was pretty good as far as using what I had around the house already.

So there you go, Jarrad. Got some lean delicious protein!

This is me. - 12.22.09

Pardon the perhaps graphic nature of this post. The above shot was taken about five minutes ago by Steve, my boyfriend. This is my body as of December 22, 2009. This is the second day.

This morning I have had some awesome zukes and carrots from last night so far. I might also munch on some flax and oat cereal (it's just sweet enough to be awesome) and for snacks today, I've got some fresh lettuce and tomatoes with which to make lettuce wraps. At my cat Cleo would say, "NOM NOM NOM."

Anyway, this is the reality I'm currently facing. That is my body, and unlike a lot of women, I did not look in the mirror and totally hate myself or think I was a blimp. To be honest, I really didn't care too much about my body until the last year or so. It's hard not to care, though, when I can't wear nice clothes and can't go places all day. I don't like my thighs rubbing together anymore. I know I can change all this, though, because I know what I once was. I am young and spry, I can bounce back. I can and I am able to do what I want when it comes to my body.

Thanks again for reading.

In The Beginning...

Posted by Emily | Posted on Monday, December 21, 2009

This was me.

...there was nothing. Then, Emily ate a smoothie of apples, pomegranate juice, a ton of carrots and some honey. Later, she ate a chicken sandwhich on some oat thins bread. Later, there was some zucchini, carrots, and a small piece of lasagne. And it was good.

It was all good, and it's going to get better once I can really hit the grocery store (preferably Roots). I need to get some more cereals to nom on in the mornings, and cottage cheese to make my smoothies with more protein. Also, damn I need a ton of almonds! A friend has encouraged me to take some "before" photos, as I start this journey. I think I will do so tomorrow. Hopefully they won't be too embarrassing!

Thanks again for reading :)
